Automatic Tool Changer — Magnetic Sensing
Reliably detect the locked / unlocked state by monitoring the tool changer's piston position with magnetic sensors.
Task
Reliably detecting that the tool changer has correctly coupled to its mating half is safety-critical. The integrated fail-safe mechanism built into most tool changers cannot on its own prevent faults caused by incomplete latching. Baumer offers different sensor technologies for reliably detecting piston position.
In the magnetic sensing approach, the field of a permanent magnet mounted on the piston is monitored without contact by a magnetic sensor fitted to the housing. As the piston position changes, the magnetic field strength changes, and the sensor converts this into a switching signal for the locked / unlocked state.
A service-friendly solution: the sensor is easily fitted into a blind hole — no additional sealing material is required.
How does it work?
As the permanent magnet on the piston moves, the sensing element mounted on the housing detects the change in the magnetic field. This principle provides fully non-contact, wear-free position detection without requiring any cabling or electronics on the moving part.
