Industrial pressure measurement covers a wide range of gases and liquids. The physical and chemical properties of these products sometimes make contact of pressure gauges or transmitters with sensing elements unsuitable.
In such cases, the measuring device must be separated from the pressurized fluid by a system that can transmit the pressure to the device while isolating it from the fluid. This system is called diaphragm seal (chemical seal).
Diaphragm seals are used in applications such as:
- corrosive fluids
- High viscosity fluids
- Fluids that solidify at ambient temperature
- toxic fluids
- Hygienic practices in the food and pharmaceutical industry
- Process temperatures that are too high or too low

A chemical seal consists of a flexible diaphragm welded to a rigid upper part. The upper part is screwed or welded to the connection of the device and the entire volume behind the diaphragm and the inside of the measuring system (e.g. Bourdon tube) is evacuated and filled with a hydraulic transmission fluid. The pressure of the process fluid in contact with the diaphragm is transmitted to the sensing element of the device through the fluid.
The seal can be mounted directly on the device, via a cooling radiator, or remotely via a capillary. The entire system is always filled with transmission fluid. A variety of transmission fluids are available to ensure the best match with the process conditions.
The entire system is designed to provide very high accuracy in measurement and minimize measurement errors caused by changes in process or ambient temperature.
The D9xx series is a line of diaphragm seals specifically optimized for use with electronic transmitters. The design of these seals and a very specific assembly and filling process keep the impact on the accuracy of the installed process transmitters extremely low.
