Functionality and Technology of Calorimetric Flow Sensors

The FlexFlow flow sensor measures the flow rate of aqueous media such as CIP cleaning agents and beverages. This sensor works according to the calorimetric measurement principle. Apart from monitoring the flow rate, it is also possible to determine the ambient temperature.

The calorimetric measurement principle is based on the laws of heat conduction and heat transfer in liquids and gases. An object with a higher temperature releases some of its heat to its surroundings. The amount of this energy release depends on the temperature difference and mass flow rate. This can be used in measurement technology: A heated sensor is cooled by the liquid flowing around it, and the degree of cooling is directly related to the flow rate. This sensor can record and monitor ambient temperature as well as flow rate.
