Baumer GAPI SDK for Linux Ubuntu 14.04 with NVIDIA Jetson TK1 [AN201518]

NVIDIA Jetson TK1 Baumer GAPI SDK Linux – Ubuntu Baumer GigE Industrial Cameras

This document describes how to set up the ARM-based single-board computer Jetson TK1 for use with Baumer Industrial Cameras.

Technical Background

NVIDIA Jetson TK1 is a single-board computer with an ARM-based central processing unit (CPU). It has a quad-core CPU based on ARM Cortex A15 architecture. It also integrates a graphics processing unit (GPU) based on NVIDIA Kepler architecture.

NVIDIA Jetson TK1 supports Gigabit Ethernet with support for Jumbo Frames and data rates up to 1 Gbit/s, as well as USB 3.0 with data rates up to 5 Gbit/s.

getting started

Installing a New Operating System on NVIDIA Jetson TK1

To install a new operating system on NVIDIA Jetson TK1, a host PC with Linux operating system is required (we recommend using Ubuntu 14.04). For Baumer SDK to work, NVIDIA Jetson TK1 must be installed in "Linux for Tegra R21.5". You need to install the operating system version.

First, download the Driver Package and Sample File System from the link below:https://developer.NVIDIA.com/embedded/linux-tegra-archive

Then follow the guide on the NVIDIA website to install the new operating system:https://developer.NVIDIA.com/embedded/jetpack

Note:
Refer to the Linux Installation Guide for information on how to connect a camera, capture images, and create an application.

Baumer GAPI SDK Installation

To install the Baumer GAPI SDK, download the NVIDIA Jetson TK1 software package from the website. You can download the software package by establishing a direct internet connection to NVIDIA Jetson TK1. Then, install the software using the Linux terminal. Navigate to the directory where the downloaded file is stored (for example:/home/user/Downloads).

The filename is as follows:baumer-gapi-sdk-linux-v2.4-xxxxx-Linux4TegraR21.4-JetsonTK1.deb [1]

Run the following command to start the installation:

sudo dpkg -i baumer-gapi-sdk-linux-v2.4-xxxxx-Linux4TegraR21.4-JetsonTK1.deb[1]

[1] xxxxxis a version number.

CPU Usage and Power Consumption

Frame Rate Data Rate Power Consumption CPU Usage**
5fps 100Mbit/s 6.9W 11 %
53fps 988 Mbit/s 7.4W 15 %
107fps 1931 Mbit/s* 8.8W 20 %

Table 1: CPU Usage and Power Consumption

Table 1 shows the CPU usage and power consumption of NVIDIA Jetson TK1 when continuously capturing images from different Baumer GigE industrial cameras. For this, Baumer SDK sample 001 (with image capture & polling method) was used and the number of desired images was increased.

Note:

  • Measurements were performed with optimized network configuration and hardware.
  • *) To work with Dual GigE cameras, a mini PCIe card has been added to the NVIDIA Jetson TK1, providing two additional GigE interfaces.
  • **) Tegra K1 may disable cores depending on load condition. All cores were activated to get a comparable CPU Usage value. This also increases power consumption, so power consumption may be lower in normal use.
