Installation of Baumer GAPI SDK for Linux Ubuntu with ODROID-XU4 [AN201521]

Hardkernel ODROID-XU4 Baumer GAPI SDK Linux – Ubuntu Baumer GigE Industrial Cameras

This document describes how to set up the ARM-based single-board computer ODROID-XU4 for use with Baumer Industrial Cameras.

Technical Background

ODROID-XU4 is a single-board computer with an ARM-based central processing unit (CPU). It has an eight-core CPU based on ARM big.LITTLE technology; It includes four ARM Cortex A15 cores and four ARM Cortex A7 cores. It also integrates a graphics processing unit (GPU) based on ARM Mali technology. ODROID-XU4 supports Gigabit Ethernet and USB3.0. Hardkernel has specified data rates of up to 880 Mbit/s for the GigE interface.

getting started

Installing a New Operating System on ODROID-XU4

To install a new operating system on ODROID-XU4, a host computer is required (we recommend using Ubuntu 16.04). Linux Ubuntu 16.04 (20161125) must be installed on ODROID-XU4.

First, download the Ubuntu 16.04 image from the link below:

Download Ubuntu 16.04 Image

Since there may be problems downloading the file with Windows, we recommend that you download the image file with a Linux PC.

To install OS on ODROID-XU4, follow the guide on Hardkernel website:

Hardkernel Installation Guide

Note:You can use an SD card or an eMMC, which can be ordered from the Hardkernel website. We tested the installation with a 16GB Micro-SD-HC Class 10 type SD card.

After the image is loaded, use the “ODROID Utility” on the desktop. We recommend that you start the application. This application allows you to resize your file system. This allows you to use the entire space of the SD card in use.

Note:To connect a camera, capture images and create an application, please refer to the Linux Installation Guide.

Baumer GAPI SDK Installation

To install the Baumer GAPI SDK, download the ODROID-XU4 software package from the website. You can download the software package directly to ODROID-XU4 by connecting to the internet. Then install the software package using the Linux terminal. Navigate to the directory where the downloaded file is located (for example, Downloads).

The file is named “baumer-gapi-sdk-Linux-vxxxxx-Ubuntu-16.04-ODROID-XU4.deb” (where xxxxx is a version number). Run the following command to start the installation:

# sudo dpkg -i baumer-gapi-sdk-Linux-vxxxx-Ubuntu-16.04-ODROID-XU4.deb

CPU Usage and Power Consumption

Frame Rate Data Rate Power Consumption CPU Usage
5fps 100Mbit/s 5.5W 3 %
40fps 782 Mbit/s* 8.2W 21 %

Table 1: CPU Usage and Power Consumption

Table 1 shows the CPU usage and power consumption of the ODROID-XU4 when continuously capturing images from a Baumer GigE industrial camera. For this, Baumer SDK sample 001 (image acquisition by polling) was used and the desired image amount was increased.

Note:Measurements were performed with optimized network configuration. The camera model used was VLG-23M.

* 782 Mbit/s is the highest data rate at which ODROID-XU4 receives error-free images. Therefore, the data rate of the camera was reduced by setting a Streaming Channel Packet Delay of 20000 ticks.
