Installation of Baumer GAPI SDK for Raspbian OS with Raspberry Pi 3 Model B [AN201710]

Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Baumer GAPI SDK Linux – Raspbian Baumer GigE Industrial Cameras

This document describes how to set up the ARM-based single board computer Raspberry Pi 3 Model B for use with Baumer Industrial Cameras.

Technical Background

Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer with an ARM-based central processing unit (CPU). Here, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B is used. The quad-core CPU is based on ARM Cortex A53 architecture and also integrates a graphics processing unit (GPU). Raspberry Pi 3 supports maximum data rates of 100 Mbit/s. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the data rates of the camera used.

getting started

Installing a New Operating System on Raspberry Pi

First, download the image file from the link below:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian

Then follow the guide on the web page to install the new operating system:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/installation/installing-images/README.md

Or use the quick start guide:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/help/quick-start-guide

Once Raspbian OS is installed, you can boot the board by connecting the incoming power supply via the micro USB connector. The first initialization of the card launches a configuration menu. In this menu, you can resize your SD card partition to use all available space. We recommend you do this. In this menu you can also change the password and decide whether the Raspberry Pi will boot into the graphical desktop environment. You can always launch the configuration menu with the following command:

# sudo raspi-config

note

We recommend consulting the Linux Installation Guide to connect a camera, capture images, and create an application.

Baumer GAPI SDK Installation

To install the Baumer GAPI SDK, download the Raspbian software package from the website. You can download the software package directly to the Raspberry Pi with an internet connection. Then install the software using the Linux terminal. Navigate to the directory where the downloaded file is located (for example:/home/user/Downloads).

The name of the file is stated as “baumer-gapi-sdk-linux-vxxxxx-Raspbian-Jessie-raspberry-pi3.deb”. [1]

Run the following command to start the installation:

# sudo dpkg -i baumer-gapi-sdk-linux-vxxxxx-Raspbian-Jessie-raspberry-pi3.deb [1]

[1] xxxxx refers to a version number.

CPU Usage and Power Consumption

Frame Rate Data Rate Power Consumption CPU Usage
5fps 95Mbit/s 2.9W 19 %
10fps 191 Mbit/s* 3.8W 8 %

Table 1: CPU Usage and Power Consumption

Table 1 shows the CPU Usage and Power Consumption of the Raspberry Pi 3 (Model B) while continuously capturing images from the Baumer GigE industrial camera. For this purpose, Baumer SDK sample 001 (image acquisition by polling) was used and the number of desired images was increased.

Attention

These measurements were performed with optimized network configuration.

*) A USB3.0 to Gigabit-Ethernet adapter was used to achieve higher data rates on the Raspberry Pi 3. It is also possible to use a higher package size with this type of adapter.
