Sensors for beer production
Precise. Proven. Clever.
Baumer has been at the side of the brewing industry since 1952. We develop process sensor technologies that serve breweries in the way that best suits them, both technically and commercially. Our sensors meet all the requirements of potentially explosive atmospheres in silos, the brew house environment, the hygienic and cold requirements in the cellar, as well as the speed and vibration conditions in filling and packaging facilities. Designed to be unaffected by demanding ambient conditions, our sensors operate without interruption. Get in touch with us, and let's find the best solution for you together.
Malt receival and silo
Baumer sensors monitor raw material handling to guarantee quality and traceability and to protect the system from damage caused by blockages.
Milling and brewhouse
At the heart of brewing, correct balancing and determining efficiency are key factors for success. Our sensors ensure the most efficient use of raw materials and energy.
Wort cooler and hot water buffer
To recover the maximum energy from hot wort, the heat exchanger that acts as the wort cooler must be controlled perfectly. The amount of energy is monitored at the point where the resulting hot water reaches the hot water buffer, from where it can be used in different steps in the brewhouse.
Cold trub separation, aeration and yeast pitching
Separators consume high amounts of energy; beer losses must be avoided. This requires separator discharge that is optimized in terms of duration and extract loss. Dosing the correct amount of yeast ensures fast, good fermentation; the desired volumes are measured with an electromagnetic flow meter.
Fermentation
Fermentation equipment has special hygienic design requirements. While the desired yeast or lactic acid bacteria must be allowed to develop, unwanted organisms must be completely eliminated. The process is quite slow but requires precise control for success.
Maturation
Convection achieved through temperature control guarantees consistent quality as green beer matures. Hygienic design supports successful, simple and fast cleaning of the tanks. Although the processes are slow, they require precise control and documentation.
CIP (Clean-in-Place)
In large breweries, which typically dedicate CIP to the brewhouse, cellar and filling tasks separately, the optimum level of automation can be achieved for each task without compromising safety or efficiency.
Filtration
Filtration is a critical factor that determines how long the beer stays clear, how well the foam holds, and how full the flavor is. The process is complex; precise temperature, flow and differential pressure measurement can make a difference in cost and quality.
Filtration and flash pasteurization
Flash pasteurization does not replace the microbiology lab. But when operated optimally, it provides a safe product with low energy input. In the cross-flow process, insulated heat exchangers monitored by fast temperature sensors and precise differential pressure sensors ensure resources are used in the best possible way.

A bridge to the digital future — IO-Link Dual Channel
The term "IO-Link dual channel" was coined by Baumer and refers to sensors that offer additional switching or analog outputs alongside IO-Link communication.
With IO-Link dual channel, it is possible to run very fast processes or existing analog interfaces while still benefiting from the advantages of IO-Link technology (parametrization, condition monitoring, etc.).
